Sirin promised her parents she wouldn’t stray too far from the village, but after an hour of chasing sunlit patches in search of cloudberries she looks up and realises the trees have closed in around her.

The cloudberries weigh down the basket on her arm. She licks the juice from her fingers as she thinks.

Her parents warned her about going too deep into the wilderness. There are forest fires every summer, but this year the smoke has brought darker rumours. Sirin’s parents won’t tell her what they’re so afraid of, but her cousin said there’s a ghost up in the mountains, a terrible white ghoul with a long black cloak and fire dripping from its bony fingers. Come Fly by Soawen

Fanfiction
Come Fly by Soawen
Characters: Rannon, Khata
Summary: After the Final Battle, Rannon has trouble seeing anything but a battlefield when he approaches a zenaqet board. Combine that with the darkest night coming up, and he’s in free fall. Fortunately for him (and his surroundings), Khata is used to dealing with foolish ZanTaoyakas.
Warnings: Mentions of battle, a so not realistic cure for the aftermath of war
A/N: This is the cause of this. I realize Rannon and Khata are being all bad-ass here (no better player indeed!), but maybe the aftermath was less … fun.

Isokell was careful not to scowl when Rannon carefully stepped around their zenaqet board and ignored their game completely despite it being his turn.

Not that she minded how he sank down next to her with a murmur of her name, not at all, but it was so frustrating that he didn’t want to talk about the lack of- of- she didn’t know what, only that he had stopped playing after what had become known as the Final Battle, claiming that he had played enough, and only that he was not getting any better with new year and its dark night closing in. The Ascent by Lawenta

Fanfiction
The Ascent by Lawenta
Characters: Rannon
Summary: A cell door left open out of mercy is one thing. The long trek back to the world up above another altogether.

The ascent was endless. Fitting the depth of his fall, he thought bitterly, and let sheer spite draw him on hands and knees one more step up.

Reduced to a worm in its hole, crawling out after the rain else it drowns in the dark.

He allowed himself to sink against the rough stone of the wall, just for a moment, and contemplated the small shirae-lantern on the step below him.

Summary: Isokell hears about how the lost traitor-prince of Ku’Ombos has been found and captured. Curiosity piqued, she goes to see the prisoner for herself.

She heard them talk about the man, sitting in the council chamber in demure silence, supposedly learning about politics.

Found in the lowest levels of Machra-la. Enslaved, used. Blinded. Not a threat, but perhaps more could be gained, politically speaking, than just justice being served at long last?

The Star – Coda by Lawenta

The Star – Coda by Lawenta
Characters: Maqaxha
Summary: Unable to fathom the second chance he’s been granted, Maqaxha/Kitsune is quite overwhelmed by the simplest of things.
For art and other works inspired by this, click here.

He ran his fingers over the fabric of his tunic in wonder. Not because is was so fine – it wasn’t, not in particular, though it was durable and tightly woven – but because it was intended for him and it covered him like a second, protective skin. It clung to his neck at the back and didn’t leave even the tips of his collarbones visible to a roaming eye, especially when he closed it as tightly as it would go. The sleeves went down to his wrists, covering the sores, and pants completed his outfit, easy to move in yet going down to his ankles.

The sweet rush of victory was great while it lasted.

Then reason kicked in, and with it the sick realization just whose ego he’d decided to stroke by challenging him to a session of light sparring.

That plan went horribly wrong.

Truly, horribly wrong.

For art and other works inspired by this, click here.

Makes sense, was her first stunned thought as the King of Kayalana finally presented himself.

She’d recognize that face anywhere, although the expression was completely different – actually, that was her second thought, that he didn’t look nearly as prideful as a monarch as he used to look as a condemned captive waiting for death.

Second Born by Lawenta

Second Born by Lawenta
Characters: Rannon, Isokell, Karaon, Meimere
Summary: Following the birth of his daughter, Rannon reflects on the bewildering joy and dread of having his own family.
For art and other works inspired by this, click here.

Isokell with a newborn in her arms was much quieter than her usual unbreakable self. Wrapped around the small bundle of new life, nose buried in a tuft of still-wet hair.

He wondered if the little one smelled the same as Karaon had.

He resisted the urge to clear his throat. Karaon, under the hand settled on his shoulder, strained forward in barely contained curiosity.

That Which Never Will Be by Lawenta

That Which Never Will Be by Lawenta
Characters: Corrin, Lylacra
Summary: Corrin hears rumours of a while ylvain skulking around the countryside, and having a strong suspicion who it might be, sets out to look for her.
For art and other works inspired by this, click here.

It reached Corrin’s ears as a complaint.

There was a story, apparently, at the very edges of what was currently the inhabited part of Carryn-yehl, of a ghastly white, limping ylvain. A horribly bad sign: very few people saw the monster king and his companion first hand and lived, but the word has gotten around.

Besides that, as the man who carried in the news pointed out, it was a nuisance: the thing kept stealing chickens and was far too clever for any of the traps laid for it. Nobody dared to hunt it too deep into the forest. For sure that was a good way to never return.
